Hi Religion Unplugged readers, The Vatican recently “gifted to the CCCB [Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops] the 62 artifacts belonging to the ethnological collections of the Vatican Museums” — these artifacts will be returned eventually to the Indigenous communities of their origin. The return of artifacts is something even Pope Francis envisioned. As he said in 2023: “The Seventh Commandment comes to mind: If you steal something, you have to give it back. The restitution of the indigenous things is underway with Canada — at least we agreed to do it.” Others haven’t been as willing to call the artifacts stolen in the first place, which has brought its fair share of criticism. In today’s top story, Rome-based contributor Jules Gomes shares the history of the artifacts and their future — as well as why the language used for them is important. Vatican Returns Indigenous Items, But Draws Criticism For Labeling Them ‘Gifts’Activists advocating for the repatriation of artifacts “stolen by Pope Pius XI and his missionaries” from First Nations communities are unhappy by Pope Leo XIV labeling of these items as a “gift” despite his agreement to return them. The Holy See said the pope “gifted to the CCCB the 62 artifacts belonging to the ethnological collections of the Vatican Museums” as “an act of ecclesial sharing.” by Jules Gomes Crafty Residents ‘Yarn Bomb’ Postal Boxes For Holiday Cheer
