A: “Sapphire”, Ed Sheeran
The lights, your face, your eyes
Exploding like fireworks in the sky
Sapphire
Touching on your body while you’re pushing on me
Don’t you end the party, I could do this all week
We’ll be dancing till the morning, go to bed, we won’t sleep
Cham-cham chamke sitare wargi (Sapphire)
Hint: This ginger-haired English singer-songwriter who likes signing about the Shape of You appears to be in his India phase and honestly I love this for him (he even sings in Punjabi in this song!). If you went to any Diwali performances this year you would have heard this song approximately every 2 acts. Song title in lyrics quoted.
B: “Golden”, Huntr/x
We’re goin’ up, up, up
It’s our moment
You know together we’re glowing
Gonna be, gonna be goldеn
Oh, up, up, up
With our voices
Yeongwonhi kkaejil su еomneun
Gonna be, gonna be golden
Hint: This Netflix animated movie had some BANGER songs, and while I personally prefer “Soda Pop”, “How It’s Done” and “Your Idol”, this song has dominated the charts this year, spending 8 weeks at number 1 on the US Billboard Charts. I’ll accept either the band name or the movie name for the artist. Song title in lyrics quoted.
C: “The Fate of Ophelia”, Taylor Swift
And if you’d never come for me
I might’ve drowned in the melancholy
I swore my loyalty to me (Me), myself (Myself), and I (I)
Right before you lit my sky up
All that time
I sat alone in my tower
You were just honing your powers
Now I can see it all (See it all)
Late one night
You dug me out of my grave and
Saved my heart from the fate of
Ophelia (Ophеlia)
Hint: I tried so hard to not use this artist in my lyrics quiz this year (honestly just to see if I could do a year without using her) but then she released a new album and this song sat at number 1 in the charts for a few weeks, so *shrug*. You may know this artist from literally every other year of the lyrics quiz. Song title in lyrics quoted.
D: “Ordinary”, Alex Warren
You’re takin’ me out of the ordinary
I want you layin’ me down ‘til we’re dead and buried
On the edge of your knife, stayin’ drunk on your vine
The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found
Somethin’ so out of the ordinary
You got me kissin’ thе ground of your sanctuary
Shatter me with your touch, oh, Lord, return mе to dust
The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found
Hint: This song kinda came out of nowhere to spend 10 weeks on the charts this year, until it was toppled by Song B from this quiz. It was a commercial success, and received a significant boost in streaming, sales, and Shazams after the artistperformed it on season 8 of the reality television show Love Is Blind (it was also used by the WWE as part of a video package to remember the life of Hulk Hogan, further evidence that we’re living in a really weird timeline right now). This artist shares the first four letters of his first name with a Great king of Macedon who named several cities in the ancient world after himself (and at least one after his favourite hourse), and his family name means “a network of interconnecting rabbit burrows” or “a densely populated or labyrinthine building or district”. Song title in lyrics quoted.
E: “West End Girl”, Lily Allen
Now I’m in London and I’m all alone
I’m in a hotel room, I’m all on my own
Now I’m a West End girl
Now I’m a West End girl
Now I’m a West End girl
A West End girl
Hi, how are you? I miss you
Yeah
Huh?
Yeah
Right
Um
Okay
Well
I mean, it doesn’t make me feel great
Well, if that’s what you need to do, then
I guess
Well, how, how will it work?
Where—, right
I mean it makes me really sad but
Mm-hm
Mm-hm
No, I’m, I’m fine, I’m fine, I just, I want, I want you to be happy
Okay
Okay, I’ll speak to you later
I love you
Bye
Hint: Her debut album may have been titled “Alright, Still” but no one who has listened to this, the title track from this English artist’s latest album thinks she’s alright at the moment as she processes the undoing of her marriage to actor David Harbour and how she processed his alleged acts of infidelity. You may know her from previous songs such as “LDN”, “Alfie” and “F*ck You”. Song title in lyrics quoted.
Bonus: “Ceremony”, Stray Kids
Working off time
That ratio got us going worldwide (Worldwide)
Thirsty day and night
They put us in the desert but we survive
Busy giving our light
Unlike them, we’re getting all the spotlight, yeah
Listen to the war cry
Karma, karma, karma, karma
Hip-hip (Hooray)
Hip-hip (Hooray)
Hip-hip, hip-hip
Karma, karma, karma, karma
Ceremony
Hip, hip, hip, hip, hip, hip, hip (Hooray)
Woah, ceremony
Hint: I realised sometime in October that this band was going to be my #1 artist on my Spotify Wrapped this year, so have one of their new songs as a bonus round! This song was the lead single from this Korean boy-band’s 4th full album “KARMA” (but because they’ve also released 3 EPs, it makes them first act to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 with seven albums). This band featured on the soundtracks of superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine and the second season of animated fantasy series Arcane, titled “Slash” and “Come Play” (with Young Miko and Tom Morello), respectively. Their biggest hits include “Back Door”, “God’s Menu”, “Chk Chk Boom”, “MIROH”, “Thunderous”, “MANIAC”, “CASE 143” and “Lose My Breath” (ft. Charlie Puth). Their name approximately means lost/wandering children, and the song title is in the lyrics quoted (it’s not the same as the album name).
