Ahiahi mārie, welcome to The Spinoff Daily in partnership with the Brain Drink, Ārepa. Today on The Spinoff, we look back at 10 incredible moments from the Rugby World Cup final, bust some myths about mātauranga Māori and remember the late Wellington poet Geoff Cochrane. But first, do you have an EV? If not, it’s probably just a matter of time. Here’s Justin Lester, government director of data science company Dot Loves Data: “New analysis shows the sun is clearly setting on fossil-fuelled motor vehicles. New Zealand new sales of low emission cars are skyrocketing and will overtake petrol and diesel sales as early as the middle of 2023, a fundamental tipping point in consumer purchasing behaviour. Petrol cars may soon be at risk of becoming museum pieces and modern-day fossils, much like the fuel that powers them.” Live Updates: Covid cases continue to rise Ten incredible moments from that entirely perfect Rugby World Cup final The RWC final was watched by an all-time record audience for Three Toby Manhire: Time to get behind our plucky ‘All Blacks’ The end of a golden era at TVNZ – and the mystery of what comes next Busting the myths about mātauranga Māori Collections like AroVideo’s deserve more than just a sentimental sendoff Remembering poet Geoff Cochrane, 1951–2022 The turntables that turned me into a Dad DJ In partnership with Panasonic, we’ve written a few odes to some of our favourite pieces of home tech. Here, Russell Brown celebrates his trusty turntables. “I tried being a digital DJ, I really did. I got a controller and a Serato licence, but it didn’t take long to realise that I was doing the thing I already do all day, the thing I was trying to get away from: staring at a computer screen. I needed something I could get my hands on. I’m rubbish at woodwork and gardening and I cook nearly every night anyway, so messing about with records was it for me. I bought one direct-drive turntable and a mixer, then another turntable. I became a Dad DJ.”
It began with a story about clamping that became a hit saga on The Spinoff, and ended with legal threats and some deeply freaky confrontations.
