Pope Francis apologizes to Canada's Indigenous peoplesHis open acknowledgement of church's role in physical and sexual abuseHi ReligionUnplugged readers, On Monday, Pope Francis said he was “deeply sorry” for the way the Catholic Church had treated Canada’s Indigenous peoples. More than 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families from the 1880s to 1990s and sent to schools run by the church that forced conversion and where abuse was common. This mistreatment was amplified when, last year, unmarked graves — many of which belonged to children — were found on the grounds of these former schools. The pope’s tour through Canada continues until Friday. Senior reporter Clemente Lisi details the rest of Francis’s apology and more surrounding the tour in today’s top story. See you next week.
