Five Birmingham breweries that used to get the city merry

Ah, beer. Ales, stouts and bitters have been the fuel of everything from the Great British pub, to ill-advised house parties while the parents are out of town.


Today, you tend to see the same handful of names on taps or on supermarket shelves. Even those that were around in the 70s or 80s tend to be revived brands brewed by a big, international company.

English summer rain is no joke - it's unpredictable, lasts for ages, and it always seems to know when you haven't got a brolly or a hood on you.


So what made 125,000 people stick it out for 6 hours in Sutton Park, 30 years ago?

Roy Walker's Catchphrase game show, for a start, which launched in January. As for sounds, you heard the nonsense Chicken Song at the top of the singles charts in May, and Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms dominated the album charts for the first quarter of the year.
